The Riddle Set Design

My first project in my Scene Design class was to design a set for a given song and descriptors. I was assigned "The Riddle" from The Scarlet Pimpernel along with the words neoclassical, ornate, and deceitful. We took these concepts from concept to a final rendering and used AutoCAD to draft a ground plan.

Rendering

This scene of the musical takes place in a ballroom where the three main characters are hiding secrets and deceiving each other. I wanted it to look elegant and upper-class, but also to include a lot of areas where actors could "hide" (behind columns and curtains, up in the balcony). By having these areas that could play with shadow, lighting could easily create a dark and secretive atmosphere for parts of the song.

Groundplan

The class was given layouts of UF's Constans Theatre to plan our designs in. We only created a groundplan for this particular project, but this being my first time drafting made it a great opportunity to get familiar with AutoCAD again along with learning the fundamentals of transferring an idea to a proper dimensioned plan.
