No Space Diner
No Space Diner was a project for Swamp Thrills Design Competition that won second place in 2021. Our team was challenged to design a space-themed interactive restaurant experience. We came up with an idea where guests would "travel" to one of five different planets for their meal and enjoy different tastes and entertainment from different alien cultures.
Presentation
This video shows the full concept we presented for the competition. The rest of this page focuses on just the drawings I worked on specifically.
Main ship
​This was a concept for the main lobby of the restaurant. Guests would enter through an elevator and be led to one of the different seating areas. There was also a stage in this main area hosting a show that exhibited entertainment from each of the different planets.
Elevator Preshow
Guests entered the building into a 1950's style fake restaurant that served as the lobby. When it was their party's turn to be seated, they would be taken up a green "tractor beam" elevator into the alien spaceship. During the ride, images float past and the host tells them the story of the restaurant with visuals projected on the walls around them.
Fire Planet
This was one of the planet-themed dining areas, based on volcanic rock. Different glowing effects would light up on the ceiling and walls and a volcano would "erupt" in the distance periodically complete with sound and smoke effects.
Crystal Planet
This dining area was a crystal-themed planet utilizing a lot of prism and lighting effects. Projections would bounce through crystals on the ceiling and a large centerpiece and create trails of light around the room.
Water Planet
This planet was an undersea alien ocean life themed planet. Set pieces against the walls would periodically release bubbles into the air and projections of creatures floating past and light effects would show on the ceiling.
Jungle Planet
The last dining room was a jungle environment filled with animatronic alien creatures. They would move and chatter throughout the day, and occasionally sing songs in sync with each other to entertain guests.
